This new four-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain belongs to Mercedes-Benz's modular FAME (Family of Modular Engines). Apart from turbocharging, the engine incorporates a second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG) that facilitates lower engine speeds and promises superior power generation. Using the vehicle's 48-volt electrical system, the ISG performs tasks like coasting, boosting, or energy recovery, leading to considerable fuel economy. Quick and seamless engine startups result in an almost unnoticeable start-stop function, similar to the switch from coasting with the engine deactivated to vigorous propulsion when the engine is activated. The clever collaboration between the ISG and the combustion engine ensures a remarkably smooth idle state. With the introduction of a new battery, the electric motor's power output has been boosted from 21 to 23 hp in comparison to other series, and the boost torque stands at 148 lb-ft.
