The first details about the new Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class
Recently unveiled in Munich, the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class is a window into the future of the brand and its upcoming entry-level electric models, which promise big advancements in terms of design, sustainability, and technology over current EVs.
A strikingly modern appearance
Mercedes-Benz has always valued designs that embody the company’s values of luxury and elegance. This is still true with the Concept CLA Class, but these elements have been thoroughly modernized to make the next generation of Mercedes EVs some of the most distinctive products it has ever conceived. The main theme of the car’s design is lighting. The use of low-energy LED lights to accent design features on the outside and in the cabin has been expanded to a whole new level, with lightbars that wrap around the front and rear of the car, terminating in the front and rear doors. To make it absolutely clear that the new CLA is a Mercedes-Benz model, the front and rear star logos are illuminated and both the headlamps and the taillamps adopt the shape of this iconic trademark.
Inside, the use of white leather and metallic accents gives the cabin an airy and futuristic look, which is further enhanced by the illuminated panoramic roof and the new full-width single-screen dashboard.
A new step toward sustainability
The arrival of the next CLA and its derivatives (a wagon and two SUVs) will mark a new chapter in Mercedes-Benz’s pursuit of sustainability. Indeed, the MMA platform that will be used by these models will cut back 40% of value chain CO2 emissions versus current Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles. In addition, care has been taken to make the new CLA as environmentally friendly as possible, such as by using vegetable tanning for the Nappa leather upholstery and interior trim pieces made from recycled paper instead of plastics. Other sustainable materials such as bamboo are used in the cabin, while the entire structure of the vehicle makes use of almost CO2-free steel and CO2-reduced aluminium.
Advanced technologies inside and out
The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class showcases the latest in technologies from the brand, many of which were first shown in the EQXX concept. For example, this new model features an 800-volt charging architecture that allows charging rates of up to 250 kW, meaning 400 kilometres of range can be gained in only 15 minutes. Thanks to advanced battery chemistries, including an available design that incorporates silicon-oxide anodes, the Concept CLA Class will have a range of over 750 kilometres based on the WLTP calculation. Inside, the newest developments of the MBUX and MBUI systems will be put to use in order to deliver an ever more digital driving experience, including a new enhanced Level-2 driver assistance system.
